4TH NATIONAL KUNG FU CHAMPIONS...

  • 12 Jul 2017 - 15 Jul 2017
  • TALKATORA

What?

Kung fu (Mandarin: gung fu; Cantonese: gong fu) is a Western- catchall term for the Chinese martial arts. Literally translated, kung fu means “work hard,” which is why people who work hard are described as having a lot of “kung fu.”

While the martial arts have existed in China since 2600 B.C., the foundation for modern kung fu began in A.D. 527 when Indian monk Ta Mo arrived at the Shaolin Temple in the Henan province and created the 18 Buddhist Fists. As a result, many kung fu styles can trace their lineage back to Shaolin.

One of the main schools of kung fu is Shaolin (known for “external” styles that strengthen muscles, ligaments and tendons). Geographical association is another way to categorize kung fu styles: northern (long extended postures, leg work, kicks, acrobatics) and southern (deep, stable stances; focus on arm work). Kung fu skills also can be categorized by hard movements (force-on-force mentality) and soft movements (turn attacker’s force against them).

The trend of self-defense training systems moving away from the codified traditions of martial arts as a way of life have led to a view of martial arts techniques as a means of survival. Self-defense training has become about quickly developing skills for personal combat in which the mindsets range from maiming your attacker with brutal, lethal tactics to escape tactics (i.e., get the heck out of there as quickly as possible). Any self-defense system is about identifying your goal and training to meet it.

This training includes practicing and combining several stand-up fighting styles (boxing, clinch fighting, muay Thai) and several brands of grappling techniques from various arts (judo, Greco-Roman wrestling, sambo). The practitioner also trains in several ground-fighting methods.

Kung Fu will be taught by Sifu OmPrakash, who has wide experience in this field for more than 20 years. He is the Chief promoter of Lu Tran Kungfu Association (Regd.) at Kalka Mandir Premises in New Delhi. Other than Sifu OmPrakash, many stalwarts from Shaolin Temple China will be in India during June 2014 to teach our students the martial art of Kung Fu. Come and experience of Kung Fu as a self defence sports which is the need of the hour of India.
